Xscape - Indoor Ski Slope & Retail Development

Castleford

  • Architect: Faulkner Browns
  • Contractor: Shepherd Construction Ltd
  • Value: £252,000

Built in 2003 the Castleford Xscape project was the 2nd of X-Leisure's projects in the UK (Milton Keynes preceded it and Braehead followed).

The scheme is focused around an indoor ski slope and has many other bars, shops and restaurants incorporated in the complex.

The site is situated off junction 32 of the M62 and was a major development for this region with the closest major town/city being Leeds.

The building can be seen from a considerable distance away and has a 5500m2 roof area.

Description of Caswell Works:

The ventilation package consisted of the main supply and extract ductwork serving the mall areas, the back of house offices, shop demises and the various restaurants and public toilets.

There were also a series of large smoke extract fans complete with silencers, ductwork and plenums which were situated around the East and West atrium's.

The extract fans were assembled on the floor on purpose built structural steel frames before being crane lifted into place and bolted down to the main roof structure.

The air handling plant was assembled in-situ on Level 4 along with the ductwork which was then routed via the riser shafts to each floor.
